Well-planned window treatments are very useful in giving your home a new look or helping it create a new statement. With them, you can make your windows complement the rest of your home décor more. They also help you customize the amount of light that come into the house, and also control the privacy you enjoy. Valances also make mechanical devices (which allow coverings to be adjusted) more subtle, so your room will have a smoother look.

There are different kinds of valances: fabric, wood, and upholstered.

• Fabric Valances – They are the hung-on U-shaped rods made of metal like the ones used in the top portion of café curtains. When using this kind of valance, it is wise to use the same fabric you used for your draperies for a complementing look. Putting a ruffle along the edge will give it more body.

• Wood Valances – These valances may have a painted or stained finish which gives them a touch of sophistication. They are often made with a face panel and two pieces for the sides. If you are artistic enough, you can even create these valances yourself using a plywood, paint, and jigsaw.

• Upholstered Valances— These valances have a combination of wood and richly-detailed fabric to make your valance window treatments look more special and detail-oriented. They are more costly and time consuming but definitely worth the money and time.
